| The latest data from the U.S. International Trade Administration shows merchandise exports from the Peoria metropolitan area totaled a record $17.8 billion in 2012, up 17 percent from 2011. Key export categories included machinery, chemicals, fabricated metal products, electrical equipment and transportation equipment, while leading destinations for Peoria exports were Canada, Chile, Brazil, Belgium and Australia. Greater Peoria is one of just 32 metro areas with merchandise exports totaling more than $10 billion.
